What is Mobile Gaming?

According to Wikipedia, A mobile game is a game played on a feature phone, smartphone/tablet, smartwatch, PDA, portable media player or graphing calculator.

In simple word, we can say that mobile gaming is that gaming which we can play the games on our smartphone/or tablets.


The mobile media, especially the gaming industry have become the most prominent part of the mobile world. The increased use Smartphones has also made an important contribution in rapid enhancement of mobile gaming industry. As the stats speak, on global level the total revenue generated by gaming industry was 24.4 billion USD (as on 2014) which is expected to rise up to 44.2 billion by 2018.

Here are some important factors that have contributed immensely in this growing trend.

1. Improved Technology:

With the ever-improving technology, new possibilities for mobile game development have emerged. Games are now highly accessible and portable. These features have attracted even those people who would consider themselves as nongamers. Moreover, after iPhone’s introduction in 2007, mobile devices that were considered as business tools are now highlighting their entertainments values thus providing a broader horizon for game development.

Production cost is one of the main factors in the rapid growth of the mobile gaming industry. They are easy to distribute as compared to traditional games as well as has low-cost overall developmentMobile games also require less codes, therefore has less production time. Therefore as CAGR’s report predicts, the mobile gaming industry will grow at about 174% during the time period of 2016 to 2020. As the stats speak, by 2018 mobile gaming (mobile + tablet) would contribute about 39 percent of the total revenue generation. The in-app purchase is also an important factor.

3. Millennials hold the key:

The millennial generation is considered to be as the video game generation and for some reasons they are not yet grown out of their passion for gaming. As per the stats, the most popular apps used by millennial are gaming apps (53%) more than social networking apps (46%). Therefore, the millennial generation acquires a wider portion as smartphone apps users, mobile games have seen a steep increase in usage. Brilliant graphics, visual design and social media compatibility of today’s games have also made a noticeable contribution.

As the trend continues to rise, there is a strong possibility that in future mobile phones especially dedicated to gaming would be made. Moreover, looking at their feasibility, gaming industry is here to stay.
